Humminbird sues Lowrance

January 27, 2010 Leave a comment

Shortly after their side imaging technology patent was approved, Johnson Outdoors (owners of Humminbird) filed a lawsuit against Navico (owners of Lowrance) for violating said patent. Here is Johnson Outdoors’s press release. Lowrance responded with their own press release stating that their structurescan technology would continue to be sold and supported.

What does this mean for you today? Not much in my opinion.  If you are considering buying a new Lowrance, I think the stories regarding poor customer service are more concerning than this legal battle in my opinion.  But I thought it was ironic that these press releases came out right after I posted the earlier story about the internet uproar and Lowrance.   I’ll bet no one is more ready for this fishing season to start than Louis Chemi.

Trouble at Lowrance

This article from Tulsa World amazes me on many levels. It is more evidence that Lowrance is suffering from poor customer satisfaction in spite of the state of the art technology they have introduced. But more importantly–to have such an uproar due to one CSR’s resignation–what other industry shows this kind of passion and loyalty?

Big Names scheduled for February Episode

January 25, 2010 Leave a comment

Being the superstitious fisherman I am, I don’t want to jinx it by giving away names just yet. But we have scheduled some big names to appear on the upcoming February episode of the podcast. Discussion on the show will be heavily weighted towards analysis of the 2010 Bassmaster Classic on Lay Lake. These guys are subject matter experts to say the least and are in a unique position to give candid opinions about the upcoming Classic.

What questions do you have about the upcoming Classic? Email your questions to armchairanglers@gmail.com and we may ask your questions on the podcast. Even better, we welcome your comments on the blog. Click the “leave a comment” link below.

Champions Reese, Duckett Provide Unusual Edition of Bassmaster Classic in its Return to Alabama’s Lay Lake

January 21, 2010 Leave a comment

Boyd Duckett is one of eight Alabama anglers fishing the 2010 Bassmaster Classic

Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., shares the spotlight with Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Ala., in this look at two champs aiming for the same prestigious prize in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic:

Focus on Skeet: As the winner of the 2009 Bassmaster Classic, Reese enters the 40th edition of the Classic, set for Feb. 19-21 on Lay Lake out of Birmingham, Ala., as the defending champion.

Spot back on Boyd: As the pro from Alabama who won the Classic three years ago, Duckett is the defending champ on Lay Lake, having won the 2007 Classic in his home state.

Again on Skeet: Reese is a candidate to repeat in 2010 for a rare consecutive victory. The Bassmaster Elite Series pro is at the top of his game. He narrowly missed 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year honors, finishing second in AOY points. And Lay Lake ups the ante for Reese: He was the runner-up to Duckett in 2007, just 6 ounces back.

On Boyd: He made history as the only Classic winner to capture the title in his home state. The small-town Elite Series rookie who instantly hit the big time intrigued fans; three years later, anglers – especially Alabama anglers – don’t miss a chance to shake Duckett’s hand.

“I’ve had several thousand people in the last six to eight months say, ‘You know, the Classic’s coming back to Alabama, man, you’ve got to step up for us,’ ” Duckett said. “I feel like I’m fishing for a whole team of thousands of anglers in Alabama. Coming into it in 2007, I was fishing for me and a close group.”
